As a grandfather of a teenager with an underlying condition that makes her very vulnerable to the adverse effects of COVID-19, I find it very disheartening that so many of my fellow Hoosiers appear to have little empathy for helping her — as well as many other fellow Hoosiers with life-threatening underlying conditions — stay virus-free by not doing something as simple as wearing a mask in public.
As food for thought I was struck by what the National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins said on Sept. 10.
"Imagine you were an alien who landed on Planet Earth, and you saw that our planet was afflicted by an infectious disease, and that masks were an effective way to prevent the spread, and yet when you went around you saw some people not wearing them, and some people wearing them, and you tried to figure out why, and it turned out, it was their political party,” Collins said. “And you would scratch your head and think, ‘This is not a planet that has much promise for the future, if something that is so straightforward can somehow get twisted into decision-making that really makes no sense.’”
A proper question to ask is how many lives would have already been saved, and how many more lives could be saved in the future, if the political powers in our country all coalesced around the simple fact that to keep Americans healthy in these troubled times all citizens must do their part and wear masks?
