NORTH VERNON — Downtown North Vernon has had two new stores open up recently, bringing some life back to the old district, and they are getting some attention and bringing back some traffic to the area.
The new donut store called “Bohemian Cafe” located on 216 E. Walnut St is now open on Thursdays through Sundays from 7 a.m. to noon.
The name Bohemian was derived from the owner’s experiences at racing events and how the song “Bohemian Like You” by The Dandy Warhols was always played. The name also refers to how different and unusual this cafe is
According to the owner Thomas Schebler, the best thing on the menu is the “Fried Croissant.” His second favorite item on the menu is the “Heath Crunch Donut” that a North Vernon resident showed him how to make.

When asked what other stores Thomas would like to see, he said that he would “love to see more antique shops and thrift stores because of how well known this town is for antiques.” He also thinks that there should be more entertaining places for the kids.
The second store that is the most recent arrival is the “Scoop of the Loop” ice cream shop located on 35 N. Madison Ave., open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The shop is so popular that it sold out of stock in the first week, selling more than 7,000 cones.
The store was named after “Scoop the Loop” which is a car show that happens occasionally in North Vernon where car owners essentially do a lap around town.
Owner Joshua Carlton said what he would he like to see in downtown North Vernon is some kind of “night life.”
“I own the Old Redmond Lodge and the plan is to turn it into a 24-hour diner with a hookah bar with bands,” he said. “It will give the younger generation something to do.”
