Mustangs blank Eagles
ELLETTSVILLE — Brown County’s bid for its first winning season since 2013 will have to wait at least another year.
The Eagles’ offense stalled Friday night, resulting in a 14-0 loss at Edgewood in the opening round of Class 3A Sectional 30. Brown County, which finished 5-5, had beaten the Mustangs 28-18 a week earlier at home to close the regular season.
Edgewood (4-6) led the rematch 7-0 at halftime. The first score came after a blocked punt put the Mustangs in position at the Eagles 28. Five plays later, Brody Schaeffer went over from the 1 with 3:28 left in the first half.
Brown County looked like it might go in for the tying score midway through the third quarter after taking over at the Edgewood 45. Waunblee Roux ran 32 yards run to the 13 on the first play, but the Eagles turned the ball over on downs.
The Mustangs then marched 85 yards for their second touchdown of the night. Schaeffer took it the final 35 with 9:17 remaining.
Edgewood rushed for more than 200 yards and held Brown County to less than 100 yards rushing and less than 50 yards passing.
The Mustangs advance to host Washington in Friday’s sectional semifinals.
Artesians top Panthers
MARTINSVILLE — Martinsville’s Tyler Cox ran 80 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage, and the Artesians went on to hand Jennings County a 42-11 defeat in the opening round of Class 4A Sectional 23.
The Panthers (1-9) cut the lead to 7-3 on a 32-yard field goal by Ian Sawyer. But after that, it was all Martinsville (4-6).
Jennings did score a touchdown in the final two minutes. On fourth-and-19, Michael Haines hit Cole Marksberry for a 26-yard score. Wyatt Messer ran in the 2-point conversion.
