NORTH VERNON — With colder months approaching, the Jennings County High School National Honor Society has organized a charity event for those that need help obtaining coats and other winter clothing.
Students at JCHS can now bring winter apparel to their homeroom class to donate to the less fortunate.
The charity coat drive has been active since Oct. 19 and will continue through Nov. 12. In its first week, the drive has already received 25 jackets and coats.
JCHS senior Brendon Michael, the leader of the project, is encouraging other schools to get involved.

“Advice I would give to others doing this type of drive is find ways to get everyone involved in the drive,” Michael said. “Also, do not be too picky about the donations — though you do not want to receive anything that is destroyed. It does not have to be brand new and can be more than just coats.”
When Michael was asked what the biggest challenge he has faced while coordinating the drive he said: “[Figuring out] how to get the drive to seem important to students and staff at the school.”
All types of cold weather clothing can be donated including coats, hoodies, sweaters, sweatshirts and windbreakers.
All donations are being given to the First Baptist Church in North Vernon for distribution.
Those wishing to participate in the drive can bring items of clothing to a student or faculty member at the school or bring it in to the main office so they can be turned in to the NHS.
