Martinsville couldn’t find the basket inside the paint for much of Tuesday’s night’s girls basketball contest at Columbus East.
Whatever the Artesians couldn’t get inside, they sure made up for it on the perimeter.
The Olympians allowed 10 Artesian 3-pointers, with four of them coming in the fourth quarter that sparked a rally and handed East a 73-65 loss.
The loss snaps a four-game winning steak by the Olympians.
Martinsville (7-1) stunned East (6-4) early by jumping out to an 8-3 lead. Once the Olympians finally settled things down, they slowly crawled back into the game to tie it at 13-13 with a Maeleigh Roberts 3-pointer with under three minutes left in the first quarter.
The game was tied 18-18 with East holding on the final possession. Koryn Greiwe’s first 3-point attempt was off the mark, but then an Olympians rebound gave Greiwe a second-chance opportunity. This time, Greiwe’s shot went through the net before time expired to put East ahead 21-18 after the first quarter.
The Olympians grew their lead to 31-22 midway through the second quarter. The Artesians fought back to cut it to 35-31 and closed out the first half with a couple of 3-pointers to lead 37-35 at the break.
Martinsville took a 43-40 lead early in the fourth quarter, but then East went on an 8-0 run. Greiwe hit two free throws, and a layup by Leah Bachmann capped off the run that ended in a a 48-43 lead. The Olympians led 48-46 heading into the fourth.
Greiwe led East with a game-high 23 points. Gabby Dean finished with 10 and Roberts and Leah Bachmann added nine.
Martinsville was led by Ashlyn Traylor with 22 points and Kearsten Willen added 20.
