Spreading holiday cheer

While many traditions have been put on hold in 2020, the pandemic didn’t stop one of the area’s biggest holiday events from taking place this past weekend.

Community members distributed Christmas boxes to more than 1,000 local children as part of the Columbus Firemen’s Cheer Fund on Dec. 12.

Firefighters and their families loaded gift boxes filled with new toys and games into the vehicles of community residents, who started lining up at 5:30 a.m., to deliver the gifts. Rural fire departments also aided in distributing gifts to homes throughout the day.

The Cheer Fund, a 90-year-old organization that’s considered the oldest charity in Bartholomew County, made sure that strict COVID-19 protocols were followed on Saturday. However, that didn’t mean a little fun couldn’t be had, as Santa made an appearance and refreshments were served.

All of the individuals and groups that donated their time and money to make the Cheer Fund a success should be commended for their generosity.
