Dr. Walter DeArmitt, Bartholomew County health officer for 28 years, announced he would retire Dec. 31.

1995

Central Indiana Regional Blood Center announced its plan to open a branch in Columbus, creating about 25 jobs and increasing the supply of blood for local patients with leukemia and sickle-cell anemia.

1970

Two diesel engines and 14 freight cars of a 24-car Penn Central train derailed in Bartholomew County just south of Edinburgh, destroying about 1,000 feet of track.
