Columbus City Council will elect its 2021 president pro tempore on Tuesday, and District 2 councilwoman Elaine Hilber is likely to be a nominee.

At the council’s Dec. 15 work session, current president pro tem and city councilman at-large Tom Dell said that he plans to nominate Hilber for the role. The president pro tem is authorized to oversee meetings when the mayor is absent.

“I think it’s important that we have a change in leadership within the council,” he said. “I think it’s a good opportunity. And I think Elaine would add a whole different perspective.”

In early 2020, Hilber nominated Dell for the pro tem position and he was elected unanimously.

“I would like to, one, thank all of the council members for allowing me to be the pro tem this last year,” he said at the recent work session. “It was a great opportunity. I hope I served you well. I appreciate the trust that you have in me.”

The election of president pro tem is on the agenda for city council’s Tuesday meeting, as is the appointment of some board and commission members.
