Club Olympia competed in the four-day Mudsock Classic Swim Meet hosted by the Fishers Aquatics Swim Team (FAST) last weekend. The meet featured more than 300 swimmers representing 19 teams from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.
While this was a non-scoring event, Club Olympia, with 24 swimmers, was one of the top five teams at the meet with 113 top-10 and 30 top-three finishes and more than 130 personal records.
On Monday, the team celebrated its weekend success by entering nine swimmers in a special fourth-day Mile (1,650 yards) competition event, where five of its swimmers placed in the top five in their respective age groups.
Leading the team for the weekend were its 15-and-over swimmers. Brady Beyer had six PRs, 12 top-10s and was the top finisher in the 400-yard individual medley and 200 breaststroke while taking second in the 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 IM and 200 backstroke. He has 10 Senior State (SRS) and six USA Swimming Sectional Championship cuts.
Ashley Freel had four PRs, seven top-10s and took third in the 100 backstroke, 200 butterfly, 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 500 freestyle. She has 12 Age Group State (AGS), 11 SRS and five Sectional Championship cuts.
Maggie Johnson had four PRs, 13 top-10s and took second in the 200 butterfly and third in the 50 breaststroke and mile events. She has eight SRS and six Divisional cuts.
Cole Ehara had 10 PRs and nine top 10 finishes in his 13 events. He has ten Divisional cuts.
Arjun Bhadoria and Ethan Myers combined for seven PRs. Bhadoria has four Divisional cuts, and Myers, coming back from knee surgery this fall after an injury during a Trinity Lutheran soccer match, is close to Divisional cuts in a several events.
The 10-and-under swimmers were led by Joshua Pendleton and Tony Machavariani. Pendleton had three PRs and took first in the 200 IM, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 1,650 and second in the 50 breaststroke. He has AGS cuts in all 10 of the 10U events offered at the state meet, and his time in his first ever 1,650 race ranks him first in the state for 12U boys.
Machavariani, 8, had seven PRs and nine top-10s, taking third in the 200 IM and 200 freestyle competing against mostly 10 year-old swimmers. He achieved his first 10U AGS cut and has all nine Divisional cuts in the remaining 10U events.
For the 8U girls, Ivanka Chandelkar and Arya Kichambare each had three PRs and seven top-10s. Lily Pendleton had four PRs and two top-10s.
For the 10U girls, Tynlee Mollenhoff had two PRs.
In the 11-12 age group, Advika Badve, Zoie Chandelkar, Connelly Furnish, Sanaa Kulkarni and Brooklyn Pendleton combined for 34 PRs and six top 10s. Badve had PRs in four of her swims and now has four Divisional cuts. Chandelkar, unofficially the female swimmer of the meet for Club Olympia, had nine PRs and five Divisional cuts in her 10 events. She now has eight Divisional cuts. Furnish had seven PRs and five top 10s. She has two AGS and nine Divisional cuts. Pendleton had four PRs and one top 10. She now has four Divisional cuts.
The 13-14 age group combined for 29 top-10 finishes. Misha Machavariani had eight PRs, 10 top-10s and took third in the 400 IM, 500 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle. He has five AGS and eight Divisional cuts.
Hope Westphal had eight PRs, 12 top 10s and took third in the 400 IM. she has five AGS, eight Divisional and two SRS cuts.
Todd Hundley was unofficially the male swimmer of the meet for Club Olympia. He had 13 PRs and seven top-10s in his 13 swims. He achieved two AGS cuts and he now has 12 Divisional cuts.
Cassidy Furnish, Ethan Hall, Alexa Mollenhoff, and Daniella Preston combined for 17 PRs. Cassidy now has six Divisional cuts, Hall has two Divisional cuts, Mollenhoff has three Divisional cuts and Preston has six Divisional cuts.
HOCKEY
Flames finish second
Five Columbus teams competed in tournaments last weekend, with the Squirt Flames A finishing second in the Arctic Blast Tournament in St. Louis.
The Flames A beat the Kirkwood Stars 4-3, the Meramec Sharks 5-4 and the St Peters Spirit 3-2 before falling to Meremac 7-3 in the championship game. Brooks Larsh lead the team with seven goals and four assists. Ethan Neumann netted three goals, Carter Davis scored two goals, Aaron Warble recorded one goal and three assists, Carter Harris had one goal and two assists, Maddox Coy scored one goal and Thomas King added one assist. Canyon Long was in net with a 84.16 save percentage.
Squirt Flames B finished third in the Rock and Roll Cup in Cleveland. The Flames B fekk to Northern Kentucky 6-1, and Indian Hill Rangers 10-0 and twice tied Bowling Green Ice Cats by 3-3 scores. Bentley Hampton netted two goals and two assists, Garrett Uy scored two goals, Hallie Mudd had one goal and two assists, Henry Jamerson and Maximiliano Perez each scored one goal and Cooper Ross, Lukas Jozsa and Logan Barringer all added one assist. Cayden Long was in net with a save percentage of 80.0.
Peewee Flames “A” traveled to St. Louis for the Arctic Blast Tournament, falling to the Kirkwood Stars 8-0, the Des Moines Jr Bucs 4-3, Afton Americans 5-4 and the Illinois Admirals 4-2. Drew Weed led the team with three goals and two assists. Eduardo Aranda scored three goals, Sawyer Patterson netted two goals and one assist, Lance Kitterman recorded one goal and two assists, Will Jamerson had two assists and River Degner and Tyson Tyner each had one assist. Lane Barringer was in net.
Peewee Flames “B” traveled to Cleveland for the Rock and Roll Cup tournament, falling to Compuware T2 6-3, BGTHA Select 8-2 and Little Caesars 11-1 before beating Compuware 7-5. Ryan McGhehey led the team with five goals and three assists. Ayden Richardson netted four goals and one assist, Ashton Nguyen recorded three goals and two assists, Bryson Moore scored one goal, Carter Kareus posted five assists, Griffin Mudd had three assists, Zane Lynch added two assists and Jonah Young, Lillian Grunow and Lilly Donica all had one1 assist. Gabriel Marsh was in net the entire weekend.
Bantam Flames traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, and beat the Knoxville Jr Ice Bears 5-0, lost to the Lansing Spartans 5-2 and the Hyland Hills Jaguars 4-0 before beating the Carolina Jr Hurricanes 4-3. Samuel McGhehey netted three goals and one assist; Collijah Kenney scored three goals; Dane Weinzapfel recorded one goal and two assists; Noah Marsh, Blake Avery, Cole Vreeland and Cole Finney all scored one goal; Leif Nelson and John Roberts each had 2 assists and Jack Warble added one assist. Jackson Wheatley and Zach Goggins each were in net two games.
BASKETBALL
Panthers sweep Owls
The Jennings County Middle School seventh-graders improved to 5-0 with a 45-38 win against Seymour on Thursday. Luke Alexander led the Panthers with 20 points.
The Jennings eighth-graders beat Seymour 57-46. Logan Napier scored 28 points, and Carter Kent added 18 for the Panthers (2-3).
The eighth-graders were coming off a 51-48 loss to St. Peter’s on Tuesday. Kent scored 25 points, and Napier added 14.
