Combest earns spot in NCAA D-II wrestling meet

TIFFIN, Ohio — University of Indianapolis’ Dawson Combest has qualified for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships for the second year in a row.

Combest, a redshirt sophomore from Columbus East, went 3-1 over the weekend to finish second at 157 pounds in the NCAA Super-Regional at Tiffin (Ohio). Combest (10-2), ranked No. 2 at 157, fell to No. 1-ranked James Wimer of Findlay (Ohio) 6-1 before bouncing back with a 6-3 win against Lake Erie’s Brandon Tenney in the true-second match.

The NCAA Division II Tournament will begin March 12 in St. Louis.

Sims reaches 100 steals plateau for Sycamores

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Leslie Sims became the first player in Indiana State softball history to reach 100 stolen bases with a steal in Saturday’s 8-2 loss at Western Kentucky in the first game of a doubleheader.

Sims, a fifth-year senior from Hauser, went 2 for 3 for the Sycamores. She added another hit in the second game, a 6-0 loss.

King’s buzzer beater lifts Army to victory

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Alex King led Army with 19 points and hit the game-winner at the buzzer Sunday in a 57-55 win against Boston University.

On Saturday, King, a senior from Columbus North, led the Black Knights with 17 points and five rebounds in a 67-51 loss to Boston.

Coles wins three conference medals

ATLANTA — Marshall’s Darby Coles, who won the 50-yard freestyle at the Conference-USA Championships on Thursday, collected two more medals on Friday and Saturday.

Coles, a senior from Columbus North, finished second in the 100 freestyle and swam on the third-place 200 medley relay team. She also placed seventh in the 100 backstroke and swam on the fourth-place 400 freestyle relay team.

Back clubs first collegiate homer

MIAMI, Fla. — Dalton Back hit his first collegiate home run at Miami (Ohio) Saturday in a 21-4 win in the first game of a doubleheader at Florida International.

Back, a freshman from Columbus East, went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the RedHawks. On Sunday, he walked four times and scored twice in a 15-6 victory at FIU.
