North girls take second

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North’s 13th-ranked girls finished second, and the sixth-ranked Bull Dog boys were third in Friday night’s Pike Invitational.

No. 1 Center Grove won the girls meet with 169 1/2 points to 116 1/2 for Columbus North, 82 1/2 for No. 2 North Central and 60 for No. 12 Cathedral. No. 2 Center Grove won the boys meet with 156 points, while No. 20 North Central edged the Bull Dogs 91 to 90 1/2 for second.

Lily Baker, Julie Klaus, Brianna Newell and Mackenzie Barnett ran a school-record 9 minutes, 18.77 seconds in winning the girls 4×800 meter relay. Newell also won the 1,600 (5:20.21), and Barnett also took the 3,200 (10:58.47). Emily Herndon captured the shot put (41 feet, 8 inches), and Klaus was second in the 1,600 (5:21.03).

Winners for the boys were Tucker Smith in the shot (64-6 1/4), Clayton Guthrie in the 1,600 (4:34.33), Matt Newell in the 800 (2:00.45), Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff in the 3,200 (9:14.45) and Kellen Hottell, Will Russell, Newell and Austin Pulkowski in the 4×800 relay (8:06.14). Evan Carr took second in the 3,200 (9:51.47).

BASEBALL

Panthers top Jets

NORTH VERNON — Koby Johnson threw a three-hitter Saturday, but three Jennings County pitchers combined on a two-hitter to lift the Panthers to a 5-1 win against Class A No. 9 Hauser.

Keegan Manowitz went 2 for 4, and Ian Sawyer had two RBIs for Jennings (9-5). Jacob Vogel, Cole Sigler and Austin Martin combined to strike out nine.

Johnson struck out eight for the Jets (11-7), who were plagued by four errors.

Columbus Christian falls

EVANSVILLE — Evansville Christian jumped out to a 12-0 lead after two innings Saturday and went on to hand Columbus Christian a 15-1 defeat.

Cam Watts-Pritchard went 2 for 3 to record both hits for the Crusaders (4-6).

BOYS GOLF

Bull Dogs finish eighth

CARMEL — No. 8 Columbus North finished eighth with a 324 in Saturday’s Spring Preview at Prairie View, site of the state finals.

No. 1 Guerin Catholic won with a 292, No. 5 Carmel finished second with a 298, followed by No. 2 Center Grove 313, No. 4 Zionsville and No. 12 Fort Wayne Carroll 320, No. 6 Bloomington South 322 and No. 7 Hamilton Southeastern 323.

Jacob Niedbalski led the Bull Dogs with a 76. Luke Schneider carded a 79, Willy Davis added an 83, Luke VanDeventer shot 86 and Tyler Wilks had a 95.

North JV, East in top 10

BLOOMINGTON — The Columbus North JV finished fifth with a 329, and Columbus East was ninth with a 351 in Saturday’s Bloomington North Invitational at Cascades.

Damon Gregory and Aditya Banerjee each shot 79 to lead the Bull Dogs. Ferguson carded an 85, Jack Schiavello added an 86 and John Merritt had a 95.

Kody Reynolds led the Olympians with an 83. Spencer Erfmeier carded an 87, Pierce Arnholt added an 89, Cole Schaefer shot 92 and J.T. Kuhlman had a 100.

Jets take seventh

Hauser finished seventh with a 386 in Saturday’s Hauser Invitational at Otter Creek. Greenwood Christian Academy won with a 325.

Justice Gilliland led the Jets with an 87. Chase Martoccia carded an 89, Caleb Wallace added a 100, Brock Thalls shot 110 and Daniel Taylor had a 111.

SOFTBALL

Lancers win twice

EDINBURGH — Mackenzie Bieker threw a four-hitter and clubbed a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth Saturday to lift Edinburgh to a 5-2 Mid-Hoosier Conference win against North Decatur.

Catey Streeval went 2 for 3, and Mackenzie Whetstine and Gracie Crawhorn each went 2 for 4 for the Lancers (10-8, 3-2). Kaitlyn Bailey had a home run and two RBIs.

Edinburgh came back with a 17-6, five-inning win against Greenwood. Crawhorn went 3 for 3 with a double, Carly Cowan went 3 for 4 with a homer and five RBIs and Bieker went 2 for 3 and threw a seven-hitter. Kyah Streeval went 2 for 4 with a double and Whetstine went 2 for 5 with a double, a home run and four RBIs.

Panthers fall to Dragons

NORTH VERNON — Class 4A No. 1 New Palestine swept a doubleheader Saturday at Jennings County, winning 12-2 in six innings and 12-1 in five innings.

Delaynee McCreary homered in the second game for the Panthers (8-14).

GIRLS TENNIS

Tigers blank Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Lawrenceburg won the three singles matches in straight sets Saturday in a 5-0 win at Jennings County.

Reagan Brown fell to Elle McMullen 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Tatum Brown lost to Gracie Safaviyan 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Carmen Kopitzke fell to Evelyn McAndrew 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Panthers (10-6).

Jennings’ Liz Ertel and Sydney Carson lost to Calli Pope  and Ella McAndrew 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Cassidy Mull and Hannah Green fell to Jasmyn Blackburn and Lola Safaviyan 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
