North wins outright title
BLOOMINGTON — Fourth-ranked Columbus North wrapped up a perfect Conference Indiana season with a 5-0 win at Bloomington South.
Ashlie Wilson beat Briah O’Neal 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Kathryn Wilson blanked Riley Walker 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Arya Gotoh topped Ava Rupp 5-7, 7-5 (10-8) at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs (13-0, 5-0).
North’s Jaline Tay and Tiffany Fu topped Chantelle Miller and Maddie Santer 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Leah George and Sydney Cooper defeated Caitlin Heim and Chelsie Lindauer 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
East falls to Red Devils
Columbus East fell to Jeffersonville 4-1 in the opening round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament.
Katie Hong beat Alexis Evans 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (2-12).
East’s Ayaro Nomura fell to Addie Rose Scott 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Kathrine Millwood lost to Lydia Kittrell 7-6 (4), 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Cassidy Schnur and Monica Burton fell to Loran Halstead and Evelyn Minton 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Shruthika Kumar and Katie Rieckers lost to Tiara Jones and Jocelyn Lopez 6-1, 6-0 at at No. 2 doubles.
Golden Bears edge Jets
HOPE — Hauser won both doubles matches, but Shelbyville swept the singles positions to claim a 3-2 victory.
Aunaka Wasil and Emily Harker beat Adeline Haacker and Emma Sandman 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles for the Jets (7-4). Gabby Johns and Charlie Clark topped Karlie Lawson and Renee Aldridge 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Hauser’s Andie Clark fell to Gabbie Knox 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Bella Kilps lost to Jaidyn Tackett 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Kaitlynn Everroad fell to Grace Comes 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
New Albany stops Panthers
NORTH VERNON — Jennings County fell to New Albany 4-1 in the first round of the HHC Tournament.
Carmen Kopitzke beat Sierra Zamarano 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Panthers (10-7).
Jennings’ Reagan Brown fell to Claire Meyer 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Tatum Brown lost to Natalie Saydera 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Liz Ertel and Sydney Carson fell to Layne Burke and Lily Meyer 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Cassidy Mull and Hannah Green lost to Elise Conrad and Marie Crone 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Twisters sweep Eagles
NASHVILLE — No. 29 Oldenburg Academy won all five matches in straight sets in a 5-0 win at Brown County.
Anna Tipton fell to Teresa Wanstrath at No. 1 singles, and Anna Stogsdill lost to Mimi Wilder at No. 2 singles, both by 6-0, 6-1 scores. Julia Burt fell to Izzy Price 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Eagles (6-7).
Brown County’s Londyn Koester and Katie Tipton lost to Emma Back and Evelyn Storms 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Mattie Satter and Abi Bowman lost to Mary Hunter and Alyssa Wanstrath 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Spartans slip past Lancers
SHELBYVILLE — Edinburgh won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, but Southwestern (Shelby) took the other three to pull out a 3-2 Mid-Hoosier Conference win.
Annelise Lollar beat Kyla Robertson 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Bethany Burton topped Lauryn Blondell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles for the Lancers (2-9, 1-3).
Edinburgh’s Jessica Walsh fell to Brooklyn Schneider 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Alyssa Funkhouser and Peyton Bryant lost to Sydney Ebersold and McKinley Correll 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Zoey Sida and Gracie Myers lost to Faith Kelley and Ella Rice 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
SOFTBALL
Bull Dogs blank Braves
BROWNSTOWN — Maddi Rutan and Peri Foust combined on a three-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lead Columbus North to a 7-0 win at Brownstown Central.
Kelsey Lovelace went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Lillian Mackey went 2 for 4 with two doubles for the Bull Dogs (15-4), who pounded out 10 hits. Meghan Waggoner had a home run and two RBIs.
New Albany nips East
NEW ALBANY — New Albany scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to hand Columbus East a 2-1 HCC defeat.
Megan Kennedy and Kaylee Smith combined on a five-hitter for the Olympians (4-15, 1-6).
Panthers rout Braves
NORTH VERNON — Shelby Wilson and Lidia Hall combined on a six-hit shutout in Jennings County’s 15-0, five-inning win against Indian Creek.
Tori Lee went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs for the Panthers (9-14). Averi Zamora went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs, and Wilson went 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs.
BOYS GOLF
North’s Schneider gets ace
BLOOMINGTON — Luke Schneider had a hole-in-one on the 196-yard par-3 No. 7 at Bloomington Country Club but No. 8 Columbus North fell to No. 6 Bloomington South 313-318.
Jacob Niedbalski led the Bull Dogs with a 76. Schneider carded a 78, Luke VanDeventer added a 79, Willy Davis shot 85, Damon Gregory had an 87, Jack Schiavello finished with an 88 and Tyler Wilks shot 93.
Cubs edge Olympians
MADISON — Kody Reynolds won medalist honors with a 40, but Madison edged Columbus East 176-177 at Sunrise.
Cole Schaefer carded a 44, Pierce Arnholt added a 47 and Spencer Erfmeier shot 47 for the Olympians. Jamaal Starks had a 48, J.T. Kuhlman and Logan Stevenson each shot 54, J.R. Hughes finished with a 59 and Josh Saewert and Mason Whipker each shot 65.
Jets take second
Hauser finished second, and Edinburgh took third in a tri match at Otter Creek. North Decatur won with a 166 to 191 for the Jets and 205 for the Lancers.
Justice Gilliland led Hauser with a 44. Chase Martoccia carded a 48, Daniel Taylor added a 49, Jesse Bragg shot 50, Brock Thalls had a 57 and Ben Johnson finished with a 67.
Max Blandford led Edinburgh with a 42. Trevor Moon carded a 50, Mason Calhoun added a 52, Devyn Milburn shot 61 and Keegan Smith had a 70.
Braves top Trinity
BROWNSTOWN — Jacob Sabotin won medalist honors with a 39, but Trinity Lutheran fell to Brownstown Central 181-201 at Hickory Hills.
Kade Hill added a 49 for the Cougars. Preston Kovener shot 54, and Caleb Williams had a 59.
BASEBALL
New Albany blanks East
NEW ALBANY — Class 4A No. 6 New Albany held Columbus East to one hit in a 5-0 decision in the first round of the HHC Tournament.
Will Rieckers had the lone hit for the Olympians (7-10-1). Kaden Wise, who pitched the first 5 2/3 innings, and Ethan Ianni, who recorded the final out in the sixth, combined on a five-hitter.
Mohawks rally past CC
WALDRON — Waldron scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to rally for a 7-6 win against Columbus Christian.
Ethan Nickerson had three RBIs for the Crusaders (4-7).
Cubs topple Panthers
NORTH VERNON — Madison scored the game’s only runs in the seventh inning to post a 2-0 victory at Jennings County in the first round of the HHC Tournament.
Jacob Vogel threw a five-hitter and struck out 11 for the Panthers (9-6).
Cougars down Jackets
GREENSBURG — Devin Pate and Joseph Royer combined on a three-hitter to lead South Decatur to an 8-0 MHC win against Morristown.
Evan Wullenweber went 3 for 4 with a double for the Cougars (8-6, 5-2). Avery Seegers went 2 for 2, Pate went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Clayton McNealy went 2 for 3 and Ben Stier went 2 for 4.
