Letter: Columbus, country isn’t racist

From: Larry Jackson

Columbus

It is time to set the record straight. There are those that refuse to accept the fact that the USA is no longer a racist country and Columbus is no longer a racist community.

It is amazing that Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. has collaborated with the local chapter of the NAACP to create a mentoring program “geared to the Black, brown and biracial community.”

Imagine the outcry if BCSC partnered with an organization to create a mentoring program “geared to the white community." The door to racial discrimination swings both ways.

If BCSC is serious and committed to the harmony of our multi-race community, then the last thing they should do is establish a program, regardless of its merit, targeting a specific racial group, at the exclusion of others. This is the definition of racial discrimination.

What was BCSC thinking? Is this a message to the white student population that they should feel guilty because they were born white? Are we being prepared for a white privilege campaign at BCSC, with critical race theory and the 1619 project included in the K-12 curriculum next school year?

As stated by former Congressman Lee Hamilton in a recent article in The Republic, “our future depends on refocusing on what unites us, not what divides us”.

For the future of our nation and our community we have to stop virtue shopping and playing the blame game.

Take race out of the equation. We must have a race neutral school corporation that benefits everyone “with liberty and justice for all”.
