Bull Dogs, Olympians selected All-District

Kyler McIntosh

Four Columbus North and four Columbus East baseball players have been named to this year’s Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association All-District team.

North senior Kyler McIntosh is the District Player of the Year. He is joined on the squad by senior teammates Austin Bode, Reese Harmon and Hayden McDaniel.

Making the team from East were seniors Parker Harrison, Ben Major, Clayton Taylor and Kaden Wise.

All-District players now are eligible to be chosen for the IHSBCA All-State team.

McDaniel to retire at end of season

Ben McDaniel will retire as Columbus North’s baseball coach after this season.

McDaniel has coached the Bull Dogs the past eight years and has led them to two sectional and one regional title, with a Class 4A final four appearance in 2017. North is 21-4-1 and ranked No. 2 in 4A this season.

McDaniel coached his older son Brice for four years, and his younger son Hayden is a senior this season.

“It’s something I’ve known for the last eight years,” McDaniel said. “I made a commitment to (former athletics director) Jeff (Hester) that I’d say on for eight years if he’d have me that long, and I wanted to honor that commitment. But I can’t continue to give the program what it needs with my job and everything else.”

Ben McDaniel, who has worked at Faurecia, recently left there and bought another company.

East, North girls track athletes get callbacks

Several Columbus East athletes and two Columbus North girls have received callbacks to Tuesday’s Franklin Regional.

East’s Katie Hagan in the pole vault and 300-meter hurdles, Elise LaSell in the high jump, Jaylyn Nelson in the shot put, Caitlyn Lucas in the discus and Emma Gray in the 300 hurdles have been added to the field, along with all three Olympian relay teams. North’s Helena Ho in the long jump and 200,  Shae Scruggs in the shot and Olivia Johnson in the 400 also made it.

All of those athletes finished fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh in Tuesday’s Franklin Sectional. Beyond the top three in each event, who automatically qualified, the next-best four performances in each event from the four feeder sectional sites are added to the regional field.
