Driver arrested after accused of leaving scene of accidents

Columbus police officers arrested a local man Wednesday evening on multiple charges after he was accused of driving while intoxicated and crashing into two vehicles.

At approximately 8:50 p.m., CPD officers responded to the area of Jonesville Road and County Road 200S in regards to the crashes. When officers arrived, they spoke to a witness who advised that a black truck, driven by Jason E. Ballard, 45, of 2085 Kingdom Drive, rear ended a car at the intersection, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Ballard is accused of fleeing the scene of the accident and crashed into a second vehicle on Jonesville Road, Harris said.

When officers spoke with Ballard, they noted that his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. Ballard was given a portable breath test and provided a breath sample of .227 % (nearly three times the legal limit in Indiana), Harris said.

Ballard was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital where a blood draw was conducted. Ballard was later placed under arrest and remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (Class C misdemeanor) and leaving the scene of an accident (Class B misdemeanor).

Ballard was being held in jail in lieu of $6,000 bond, jail officials said.
