In answer to Scott Keen’s letter to the editor (“What is it, exactly, that Republicans support?”, Feb. 2), here is exactly what Republicans support, in my opinion.
- Emphasis on equality of opportunity and not equality of outcome is very important!
- Smaller government lets people take advantage of lower taxes to invest in their futures.
- Give children access to the best schools and to the best teachers.
- Welcome lawful immigration, and oppose the illegal variety.
- Several large unions originally were formed to (rightfully) oppose oppression in the workplace, but now have lost their focus — rather, they are focusing on their status quo.
- Our society has become too dependent on government handouts, especially by programs that are not self-supporting — Medicare and Social Security to name the two biggest. We have become too polarized to fix either of these, for now.
- Rather than through government handouts, local charities and other local organizations offer the best use of charitable donations.
- We believe that every U.S. citizen has a right to vote. There is a big difference between absentee ballots and mail-in voting.
- Follow the science — life begins at conception.
- One exception — As a country, we continue to spend way beyond our means. Fiscal responsibility is not addressed by Republicans, and really ignored by Democrats. When will we address this?
Teeing off on the opposition has become too popular. For a change, let’s all try to focus on the positive! We still live in the best country in the world!
Sure, America is not perfect, but we have the ability to resolve problems and move forward as a united country. We must have open, honest, intelligent discussions on how to do this. Is anybody listening?
