CPD cameras help locate suspect in stolen vehicle case

Columbus police officers arrested a local man on several charges after they located a stolen car on Tuesday afternoon.

At approximately 2:10 p.m., CPD officers received a FLOCK camera notification of a stolen vehicle entering Columbus, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The officers located the vehicle unoccupied a short time later near State Road 11 and Kenmill Drive and observed a man later identified as Anthony B. Smith, 44, of 2750 E. County Road 800S, running towards a nearby mobile home park, Harris said. After a short foot pursuit, Smith was detained and after a brief investigation, he was placed under arrest.

While searching the stolen car, the officers located methamphetamine and fentanyl inside the vehicle, Harris said.

Smith was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded with a 48-hour hold on the following preliminary charges:

Possession of methamphetamine (Level 4 felony)

Possession of a narcotic drug (Level 6 felony)

Theft of a vehicle (Level 6 felony)

Resisting law enforcement

Possession of drug paraphernalia

Initial bond for Smith was set at $115,000, according to jail officials.
