Two Columbus students are among 15 who will compete in the virtual Poetry Out Loud State Finals today.
Layla Sanders from Columbus Signature Academy New Tech High School and Sreepadaarchana Munjuluri from Columbus North High School and students from around the state will recite classic and contemporary poems during the event that begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be livestreamed. The state champion receives a $200 cash prize and the champion’s school receives a $500 stipend to purchase poetry books. Each state finalist will receive an original Poetry Out Loud screen print by artist Tahj Mullins and a book of poetry. The state winner will compete in the national competition in April, where more than $50,000 in prizes and school stipends will be awarded.
Poetry Out Loud is a national partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The event also is supported by the Indiana Arts Commission.
