Center plans Earth Day event

The Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District is hosting an Earth Day celebration on April 23, with various activities for residents and amnesty offered for those seeking to drop items off that are difficult to recycle.

Festivities will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Columbus/Bartholomew County Recycling Center, 720 S. Mapleton St., Columbus.

During that time, the following amnesty will be in place for “hard to dispose of waste”:Refrigerant-containing appliances: Up to two at no cost

Propane tanks: Up to two gas grill tanks at no cost

Tires: Up to four personal vehicle tires, rims removed, at no cost.

Televisions and monitors: $20 each

These offers only apply to Bartholomew County residents, not individuals living outside the county or local businesses.

No household hazardous waste will be accepted during the event.

Residents can also get “a pick-up truckload” of mulch or compost for free from 8 a.m. to noon. during the Earth Day celebration.

Other activities will include document shredding, educational displays, a book swap, a family tour of the recycling center, crafts, a plant swap for county residents, free food and drawings for prizes.
