Club Olympia Swim Team, with just under 50 athletes competing, opened its 2022 Long Course Season with a second-place finish at last weekend’s “Early Summer Slam” Meet hosted by the Franklin Regional Swim Team.
The much larger host team easily outdistanced all other clubs for first place in team scoring. Club Olympia took a close second ahead of teams from Bloomington, Indianapolis and Noblesville in the 12-team event.
Top performers and event winners for Club Olympia included Connelly Furnish, Tony Machavariani, Joshua Pendleton, Todd Hundley, Aashka Shah, Ashley Freel, Misha Machavariani and Shreyan Kulkarni.
Tony Machavariani finished second in the 10-and-under Boys high-point scoring with 140.5 points, getting eight top-10 finishes, including 1 st in the 50-meter breaststroke, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley. He also placed second in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Kulkarni placed 5th in the 10U Boys high-point scoring with 120 points, placing first in the 100 breaststroke, second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 50 butterfly as part of his eight top 10s.
Shah finished second in high-point scoring in the Girls 10U with 135 points by getting eight top 10 finishes, including firsts in the 200 IM and 200 freestyle and seconds in the 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly.
Arjun Agarkar, Aahan Gupta, Lily Pendleton, Vivan Shah, and Xavier Zhang combined for eight top 10 finishes on the weekend. Also competing in the 10U age group were Aarush Datar, Sarthak Deshmukh, Aahana Ingole, Myra Jaryal, Adir Joshi, Teddy Machavariani, Shourya Malviya, Emily Meek, Chad Pendleton and Bella Zhang.
Joshua Pendleton, on a limited weekend schedule in the 11-12 Boys division, took first in the 100 freestyle, 200 IM and 400 freestyle; second in the 50 butterfly and 100 backstroke and fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Nandini Kondhare placed eighth in the 200 IM. They were joined by 11-year-olds Aubrey Hernandez and Vidita Keskar.
Connelly Furnish was the top point scorer for the 13-14 Girls division with 182 points, placing first in the 200 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle and 400 IM. Furnish also took second in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 200 IM.
Hundley finished top 5 in six events on a limited schedule, in the 13-14 Boys division, including first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle; second-place finishes in the 200 IM and 400 IM and a fourth in the 100 freestyle.
Zoie Chandalkar had nine top-10 finishes in the 13-14 Girls division, including fourth in the 200 backstroke and fifth in the 400 IM. Sanaa Kulkarni and Cassidy Furnish combined for five top-10 finishes. Others competing in the 13-14 age group were Saya Hauser, Saanvi Vibhuti and Lovely Panda.
As a recent transfer to Club Olympia, 14-year-old Lane Mellencamp’s 157 points were not considered part of the team’s total, and he was required to compete “unattached.” However, Mellencamp did place top five in all 10 Boys 13-14 events for the weekend, including second in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle; third in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 200 IM; fourth in the 50 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 400 freestyle and fifth in the 400 IM. Mellencamp was the high-point scorer for his age group with 157 points.
In the Senior Open Girls division, Freel had 10 top-fives, winning the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke, placing second in the 100 freestyle and 400 IM; third in the 100 butterfly, 200 IM and 400 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle. Freel was the top point scoring female in the Open Division with 106 points.
Misha Machavariani claimed 10 top 10 finishes to finish second in Senior Open Boys high-point scoring with 104 points, winning the 200 breaststroke, taking second in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke and fourth in the 400 freestyle and 400 IM. Hope Westphal had nine top-10s, including third in the 400 IM and fourth in the 400 freestyle and 200 backstroke.
Dathan Wolf finished in the top 10 in four events, including a third in the 200 backstroke and a fifth in the 100 backstroke. Maggie Johnson, swimming only two events on the weekend, placed fourth in the 400 IM and sixth in the 400 freestyle.
Cole Ehara, Pratt Badve, Ty Mayer and Cavan Stilson combined for seven top-10s. Ehara finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke, and Badve placed sixth in the 200 IM. Luke Miller, swimming his first meet for Club Olympia had two 11 th place finishes. Others competing in the Open Division were Hannah Dean, Ethan Hall, Eli and Jesse Isaacs, Annie Murer, Judah Nickoll, Rylan Perkins and Ali Trueblood.
Club Olympia will compete next in the Annual “FAST 500” invitational next weekend in Fishers.
