Hope man accused of stealing ammunition

SHELBY COUNTY — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies and Shelby city police worked together in the arrest of a Hope man accused of taking a large amount of firearm ammunition from Shelbyville’s Rural King.

Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies received the report of the theft at 8:38 p.m. Friday. A felony traffic stop was initiated when deputies observed the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on North Marr Road in Columbus, deputies said.

The suspect, identified as John Cornett, 39, Hope, was taken into custody without incident, deputies said.

Multiple cases of firearm ammunition, valued at more than $3,500, were in the backseat of Cornett’s vehicle, deputies said. Cornett was transported to Shelby County and released to the custody of the Shelbyville Police Department. The ammunition was also returned to the Shelbyville Police Department.
