North opens with wins

NASHVILLE — Columbus North’s boys and girls both opened their seasons with wins in Wednesday’s Brown County Challenge.

The event features two-person teams each running 2.5K (1.5 miles). Places from the top three teams from each school are added to figure the team scores.

The Bull Dog boys scored 18 points to 29 for runner-up New Albany and 31 for Brown County. Columbus East finished seventh with 72.

The North girls scored a perfect six points to 20 for runner-up Silver Creek and 33 for the third-place Olympians.

Seniors Sydney Morlok and Jessica Meza teamed to win the girls race in 19 minutes, 7.7 seconds to lead the Bull Dogs to a sweep of the top six places. Ainsley Sherlock and Lana Wisler took second in 19:54.6, followed by Macy Eaton and Katie Frazier (19:57.2), Sylvia Sasse and Charley Kerber (20:00.9), Ellen White and Claire Wisler (20:09.4) and Sierra Newell and Maggie Russell (20:10.4).

East’s Carly Otte and Chloe Krueger finished 12th in 21:35.3. Madison Swartzentruber and Hayden Carothers took 17th in 22:30.0, and Victoria Cuhadar and Riley Carothers were 18th (22:43.5).

Brown County’s girls had only two two-person teams. Sadie Hiatt and Hadley Gradolf finished eighth in 20:14.2, and Livie Austin and Megan Cumberledge were 19th in 23:06.1.

In the boys race, North’s Kellen Hottell and Draven Martinez finished third in 16:01.8. Adler Larson and Charlie Smith took seventh in 16:36.6, and Neal White and Denton Sluder were eighth in 16:38.2.

Brown County’s Cord Smith and Chase Austin placed second in 15:53.2. Rafe Silbargh and Charlie Webb took 15th in 17:22.0, and Case Smith and Kai Koester were 21st in 17:50.0.

For East, Cayden Lynott and Jackson Brookes finished 26th in 18:32.5. Derek Patchett and Lorren Westerfeld took 37th in 19:46.1, and Jacob Peeples and Zeke Weatherford were 43rd in 21:02.5.

GIRLS GOLF

East downs Woodmen

GREENWOOD — Katie Hong won medalist honors with a 39 to lead Columbus East to a 186-197 win at Greenwood.

Carter Gant carded a 43 for the Olumpians. Lilly Steinwedel and Grace LaSell each shot 52, Ali Trueblood added a 53 and Avery Brooks had a 54.

Lancers edge Braves

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh pulled out a 219-221 win against Indian Creek at Timbergate.

Izzy Richardson led the Lancers with a 47. Macie Blandford carded a 55, Cloee Britton added a 58, Hannah Pile shot 59, Jillian Turner had a 60 and Gracie Myers finished with a 64.

Floyd sweeps Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County came close in the second set, but dropped a 25-15, 25-23, 25-11 Hooiser Hills Conference decision to Floyd Central.

Charlee Barlow pounded 11 kills, Avynn Belding had two blocks, Lydia Roth notched 18 digs and Mallory Manowitz served one ace for the Panthers (1-1, 0-1). Abrey Belding added 10 kills.

BOYS TENNIS

Braves blank Eagles

NASHVILLE — Indian Creek won all four contested matches in straight sets, and Brown County had to forfeit at No. 2 doubles in a 5-0 defeat.

Jack Sichting fell to Peyton Strunk 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Owen East lost to Brendan Conner 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Trevor Shields fell to Grant Dalton 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Eagles (0-2).

Brown County’s Jon Kirchoffer and Sawyer Gore lost to Aiden Pemberton and Landon Sichting 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
