Columbus
Mr. Carson T. “C.T.” Smith, age 92, of Columbus, Indiana formerly of Lexington, Indiana, entered this life on September 2, 1930 in Union County, Tennessee. He was the loving son of the late Robert B. and Opal Brantley Smith. His family moved to Scott County when he was eight years old. He attended school at Scottsburg and was a member of the Class of 1949.
He was inducted into the United States Navy on September 30, 1948 at Great Lakes, Illinois. He finished his GED while in the service. He rose to the rate of Fireman Apprentice serving aboard USS SAIPAN (CVL-48) and was honorably discharged on September 29, 1949 at Norfolk, Virginia. He re-enlisted on September 30, 1949 at Norfolk and rose to the rate of Boilerman First Class serving again on the USS SAIPAN (CVL-48) during the Korean War Era and was honorably discharged on September 22, 1953 in Norfolk, Virginia receiving the Good Conduct Medal. During his time in the Navy he participated in the sport of boxing.
Carson was united in marriage on June 20, 1954 at the Scaffold Lick Baptist Church in Blocher, Indiana to Coleta Turner. This happy union of 60 years was blessed with daughters, Carleta, Cheryl, and Connie.
He worked early in life after serving in the Navy for American Can in Austin. He then worked for as a Supervisor for the Indiana Kentucky Electric Corporation in Madison, retiring with 38 years of service. He had received his Master Electricians Certificate and was a faithful member of the Scaffold Lick Baptist Church in Blocher.
He resided most of his married life in the Lexington/Deputy communities and was known for his Bee Keeping abilities. Carson enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, the outdoors especially his woods, feeding the birds, IU basketball, golf, boxing, working, going for his weekly and Sunday milk shakes, and gardening.
He also enjoyed church league softball and coaching. He held membership as well in the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion and the Bee Keeper’s Association of Indiana. Carson was a devoted husband, loving dad and papaw.
Carson passed on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 9:48 a.m. at the Traditions of Columbus in Columbus, Indiana. Carson will be missed by his loving daughters, Carleta Nienaber and her husband, Mark of Columbus, Indiana, Cheryl Hoffman and her husband, Daniel of The Woodlands, Texas, Connie Leap and her husband, Doug of Lexington, Indiana; his granddaughters, Amanda McDermott and her husband Marc and Angela Broussard and her husband, Ty; his sister, Waylen Cass and her husband, Donald of Scottsburg, Indiana; his brothers in law, Wendell Turner of California and James Turner of Lexington, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert B. Smith, died June 6, 1956, his mother, Opal Brantley Smith, died December 14, 1939, his sisters, Annarene Smith Davidson, died November 14, 2003, Cora Etta Smith Turner, died September 4, 2001 and her husband, Edward and Ruth Smith Mosley, died October 10, 2011, his brother, Carless “John” Smith, died April 16, 2009 and his wife, Belinda, and his beloved wife of 60 years, Coleta Turner Smith, died August 8, 2014.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., by Pastor David Culley at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Scaffold Lick Cemetery in Blocher, Indiana. Friends may visit Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. A final salute with military honors will be provided by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scaffold Lick Baptist Church or the Girls, INC. of Jefferson County or the Salvation Army.
