R. Kent Witte

COLUMBUS, INDIANA

R. Kent Witte died peacefully Thanksgiving evening, November 24, 2022. His family is very thankful for all the love and support we have received.

Kent grew up on the south side of Indianapolis, graduated from Southport High School, Hanover College, and Indiana University McKinney School of Law. He also studied at American University in Washington DC. He served as a JAG officer in the United States Air Force, including assignment in Vietnam. He settled in Columbus, Indiana and practiced law for over 35 years. Always an advocate for the ‘little guy,’ he spent his career and volunteer time helping those least fortunate. He especially enjoyed supporting the Columbus Cheer Fund and other causes that helped children. His favorite places on earth were Grandview Lake and Southwest Florida, especially with his grandchildren. He was deeply loved and will be missed.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; daughter, Heather Witte and husband, Todd Vare; their children, Aidan, Alexandra, and Katherine; son, Ward Witte and wife, Betsy; their children, Oliver and Ruby. Other survivors include sister, Beth Murray and husband, Bruce; nephews, Stephen and Andrew Bliss; and many beloved cousins and close friends. His dog, Caroline also brought much joy to his life.

In accordance with his wishes and love of warm weather, a celebration of life will be held at Grandview Lake in the summer of 2023.

Contributions may be made to the Heritage Fund of Bartholomew County, 538 Franklin Street, Columbus, Indiana 47201, in Kent’s honor.
