Willa May “Wendy” Powell

NORTH VERNON

Willa May “Wendy” Powell, 95, of North Vernon, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, December 26, 2022, at Majestic Care of North Vernon.

Born November 16, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late John Hobert and Josephine Iola (Hill) Huffman. She married William Henry “Bill” Powell on August 17, 1952, at the First United Methodist Church in North Vernon; he preceded her in death on May 30, 2019.

Wendy enjoyed her career as a realtor for many years and volunteered at the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in North Vernon, Past President of PSI OTA XI North Vernon Chapter, and a member of Red Hat Society. Wendy was a 76-year member of North Vernon Chapter #183, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a 1946 graduate of North Vernon High School. Wendy enjoyed music, playing cards, traveling, and socializing.

Survivors include her son, Dennis Wayne “Duke” Powell and his wife, Julie from Burnsville, Minnesota, her daughter, Mary Kathryn “Kathy” Weir and her husband, Jim of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Cody (Annie) Powell of Burnsville, Minnesota, Kaitlyn Powell of Burnsville, Minnesota, Casey (Emily) Powell of Savage, Minnesota, Ashley (Jeb) Thomas of Fort Wayne and Jeffrey Butler of Palo Alto, California; and great-grandchildren, Grace Powell, Lily Powell, Delaney Powell, Emmett Powell, Claire Thomas and Kate Thomas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, John Huffman Jr. and Eugene Hill; and sisters, Virginia Wilson and Harriett Perkins.

A funeral service for Wendy will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at the Dove-Sharp &Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon. The visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.

Memorials may be made in honor of Wendy through the funeral home to First United Methodist Church in North Vernon.
