Bull Dogs take second in gymnastics sectional

INDIANAPOLIS — The Columbus North gymnasts finished a close second in Friday night’s Franklin Central Sectional, falling to Bloomington North by a little more than a half-point.

The Cougars scored a 107.375 to the Bull Dogs’ 106.8. Columbus North had edged Bloomington North in the Conference Indiana meet to close the regular season.

“We weren’t quite as on,” North co-coach Bob Arthur said. “We did have four no-fall beam routines, which was great. Vault, we did well. Bars, we were not as strong as I was hoping. Beam, we did very well, and floor, no major hiccups. We just had a few missed connections that cost us a few tenths.”

Bull Dogs sophomore Reese Euler won the vault (9.6) and bars (9.55) and finished second on the beam (9.45) and third on the floor (9.125) on her way to winning the all-around competition with a 37.725.

Lindsey Mullis finished second on the bars (9.175) and seventh on the beam (8.9) and tied for ninth in the all-around (34.05). Laney Acton took 16th in the all-around (32.075).

Hannah Perry returned from an elbow injury to tie for ninth on both the beam (8.85) and floor (9.075).

“I’m very pleased with Hannah Perry, who came back in and did a fantastic job on both floor and beam,” Arthur said. “That was a real highlight to have her come back and shoulder a lot of the success on those events.”

Columbus East ended its season with a ninth place finish with an 87.2. Cami Warren led the Olympians with a tie for 18th in the all-around with a 31.425.

Columbus North advances to Friday’s Franklin Central Regional. The top three teams from there advance to the March 11 state finals.

“We survived to fight another battle,” Arthur said. “As long as we advance to state, that’s a good thing. I’d say we’re in good shape to be in the top three teams, and hopefully, we’ll have a good meet.”
