Brinegar nets third Olympic Trials cut

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Michael Brinegar earned his third 2024 Olympic Trials cut with his performance in last weekend’s TRY Pro Swim Series event.

The Columbus native finished eighth in the 400-meter freestyle in 3 minutes, 54.88 seconds, to add a Trials cut in that event to the ones he previously had achieved in the 800 freestyle and 1,500 freestyle.

At the Fort Lauderdale event, Brinegar finished fourth in the 800 freestyle in 7:54.52 and fifth in the 1,500 freestyle in 15:11.49.

Brinegar now ranks as the fastest American (and fifth-fastest in the world) this year in the 800 freestyle, second-fastest American (and eighth-fastest in the world) in the 1,500 freestyle and fifth-fastest American in the 400 freestyle.

Following the meet, Brinegar headed to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for a three-week USA Swimming National Team Camp. His next competition will be the USA Swimming Open Water Nationals April 22-23 in Sarasota, Florida, which is the first step in the Open Water qualifying process for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Duncan captures Grandview Grind

Robert Duncan was the winner of Saturday’s Grandview Grind 15K (9.3-mile) race around Grandview Lake.

Duncan finished in 52 minutes, 49.3 seconds, edging Malachi Henry, who took second in 53:01.6. They were followed by Tim Hoeflinger (57:14.7), Kasey Coleman (58:33.1), Josh Knight (59:09.3), Joe Calandro (1:00:52.5), Josh Holley (1:02:03.4), Robin Macheel (1:04:21.8), Ryan Brand (1:04:54.2) and Jacob Bosecker (1:05:02.5).

Jennifer Suverkrup, who took 11th overall, was the top women’s finisher in 1:05:29.6. Jaclyn Fowler was the second female (1:07:14.3), followed by Megan Tannenbaum (1:07:33.6), Shelby Ross (1:12:48.0) and Staci Fiddler (1:16:08.7).

A total of 79 runners finished the race.

North softball to hold player/parent meeting

Columbus North softball coach Ron McDonald will hold a season-opening parent/player meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the North High School cafeteria.

Coaches will introduce the 2023 team and will discuss all business pertaining to the team for this season.
