Bull Dogs win outright title

BLOOMINGTON — Class 4A No. 2 Columbus North needed extra innings before wrapping up the outright Conference Indiana title with a 7-1, eight-inning win at Bloomington South.

Tied 1-1 going to the eighth, the Bull Dogs (19-1-1, 5-0) erupted for six runs on five hits in the top of the eighth. Miley McClellan finished 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Kelsey Lovelace went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Maddi Rutan threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and did not allow an earned run.

Cougars edge Jets

SEYMOUR — Hauser rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three runs in the fifth to tie it, but Trinity Lutheran scored in the bottom of the fifth and held on for a 5-4 victory.

Bailey Tabeling went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, and Madison Keith went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Cougars (11-8). Grace Lance threw a seven-hitter.

Hannah Taylor went 3 for 4 with a double for the Jets (13-4). Paige McDaniel threw a seven-hitter.

Marlins nip Lancers

EDINBURGH — Living Water HomeSchool tied it with a run in the seventh and won it with a run in the ninth for a 4-3 victory at Edinburgh.

Gracie Crawhorn went 2 for 2, and Kenna Streeval went 2 for 5 with a double for the Lancers (9-9). MacKenzie Bieker threw a six-hitter with 15 strikeouts.

Tiger Cubs top Eagles

GREENCASTLE — Greencastle pulled out a 3-2 Western Indiana Conference win against Brown County.

Ally Hash went 2 for 3 for the Eagles (2-12, 1-7).

Eagles topple Cougars

OSGOOD — South Decatur scored twice in the first, but Jac-Cen-Del rallied for a 13-3, five-inning victory.

Molly Eden had a triple for the Cougars (4-14).

BASEBALL

Dogs shock Shamrocks

Columbus North broke open a scoreless game by scoring seven times in the fifth inning in a 10-2 win against Westfield.

Blake Osbourne went 3 for 3 to lead an 11-hit attack for the Bull Dogs (12-8). Dillon James went 2 for 3 with a double, and Tyler Blythe went 2 for 4.

Zach McLean and Ryan Rayburn combined on a five-hitter.

Batesville blanks Jets

HOPE — Batesville scored four times in each of the first two innings and went on to hand Hauser an 11-0, five-inning defeat.

Three different players had singles for the Jets (11-7-1).

Shawe stops Crusaders

MADISON — Shawe Memorial scored 10 times in the first inning and went on to post a 14-1, five-inning win against Columbus Christian.

Carson Hall went 2 for 2 for the Crusaders (3-3).

Lancers win in 8

EDINBURGH — Crothersville tied it with three in the seventh and took the lead with one in the eighth, but Edinburgh scored twice in the bottom of the eighth, capped by a one-out, RBI-double by Jared Myers to give the Lancers an 8-7 extra-inning win.

Dakota Graw went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Myers went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Austin Brockman went 2 for 4 with a double and Cole White went 2 for 4 for Edinburgh (3-16). Myers pitched the final inning to pick up the win in relief.

Devils edge Panthers

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jeffersonville pulled out a 3-2, nine-inning win against Jennings County in the opening round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament.

Austin Byford and Keegan Manowitz combined on a five-hitter for the Panthers (7-14). Zane Weinhorst went 2 for 3.

Tri topples Cougars

GREENSBURG — Tri broke open a close game early to post a 12-1, six-inning win at South Decatur.

Cameron Henderson had a double for one of the three hits for Cougars (11-5).

Tiger Cubs top Eagles

GREENCASTLE — Greencastle used a five-run fifth to break open a 4-4 tie and went on to post a 10-5 WIC win against Brown County.

Nick Cooney went 2 for 3 for the Eagle (3-14, 1-8).

TRACK AND FIELD

Jet boys, SD girls win MHC

WALDRON — Colin Kistler was a triple winner to lead the Hauser boys to the Mid-Hoosier Conference title.

Kistler won the 1,600 meters (5 minutes, 1.84 seconds), 800 (2:12.86) and 3,200. Lakota Robbins won the long jump (20 feet, 3 inches) and Nolan Dailey finished second in the 1,600 (5:04.25) and teamed with Mason Moore, Ledger Gelfius and Kistler to take the 4×800 relay (9:19.13)

Luke Bruner finished second in the discus (123-0) and third in the shot put (41-4 3/4). Alex Bower took third in the high jump and the Jets were third in the 4×400 relay.

South Decatur’s boys finished second, led by wins from McKinley Shook in the 100 hurdles (15.79) and 300 hurdles (42.91). Lucas Ballard finished second in the long jump (19-11), 100 (11.30) and 200 (23.11); Rhett Martin took third in the 300 hurdles (46.20) and Donovan Hale was third in the 3,200. The Cougars won the 4×100 relay (45.31) and finished second in the 4×400 relay.

Edinburgh finished seventh as a team. Enrique Callejas took fourth in the 110 hurdles (18.62).

South Decatur ran away with the girls team title, led by a win from Kiley Best in the 100 hurdles (17.72). Bridget Nobbe finished second in the 400 (1:08.59), Maria Nobbe took second in the 300 hurdles (49.85), Madisyn Danforth was second in the 200 (28.06), Brayley Sundal finished third in the 100 (13.75) and 400 (1:09.94) and Hope Barker took third in the 200 (29.37). The Cougars won the 4×100 relay (53.70) and 4×400 relay and were second in the 4×800 relay (12:48.18)

Hauser’s girls finished sixth. Norah Berkenstock won the 300 hurdles (49.56) and finished second in the 100 (13.44), and the Jets took third in 4×400 relay.

Edinburgh’s girls finished seventh.

East girls third in HHC

NORTH VERNON — Columbus East finished third and Jennings County sixth in the HHC girls meet. Floyd Central won with 152 points and were followed by New Albany (111 1/2), East (76), Seymour (72), Jeffersonville (61), Jennings (43 1/2) and Bedford North Lawrence (28).

The Olympians were led by second-place finishes from Megan Tracy in the shot put (36-1 1/2) and discus (110-7) and Emma Gray in the 100 hurdles (16.57) and 300 hurdles (47.93). Taylor Scott took third in the 100 (12.93), Chloe Krueger was fourth in the 1,600 (5:48.37) and East placed third in the 4×800 (10:24.36) and 4×400 (4:23.08) relays and fourth in the 4×100 relay (51.95).

Rachel Manning led the Panthers with second-place finishes in the pole vault (8-0) and 200 (27.35) and a fourth in the 100 (13.17). Halle Franks took fourth in the 3,200 (13:03.32).

North, Franklin split

The No. 11 Columbus North boys rolled to a 97-35 win against Franklin, while the No. 19 Grizzly Cub girls edged the No. 11 Bull Dogs 67-65.

Nathan Sparks won the the 100 (11.36) and 200 (22.73), and Will Russell took the 1,600 (4:23.42) and 3,200 (9:46.93) to lead the North boys. Liam Milne took the 110 hurdles (15.31), Owen Russell captured the 300 hurdles (40.61), Mateo Mendez won the 800 (1:58.88) and the Bull Dogs took the 4×100 (43.93) and 4×400 (3:34.88) relays.

Sierra Newell led the girls with wins in the the pole vault (9-0) and long jump (14-9). Other winners were Moana Steele in the discus (108-5), Lily Baker in the 1,600 (5:00.36), Carys Glyn-Jones in the 800 (2:18.94), Julia Kiesler in the 3,200 (10:37.00) and from the 4×800 relay team (10:31.34).

Eagle girls 11th in WIC

ELLETTSVILLE — Brown County’s girls finished 11th with 15 points in the WIC meet.

Hadley Gradolf finished fourth in the 3,200 (11:50.00) and fifth in the 1,600 (5:25.23) to lead the Eagles.

GIRLS TENNIS

No. 1 Carmel nips North

INDIANAPOLIS — No. 12 Columbus North won the top two singles matches, but No. 1 Carmel took the other three to claim a 3-2 win in a match played at Perry Meridian.

Kathryn Wilson beat Nora Perkins 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Aya Saad topped Elyse Nelson 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles for the Bull Dogs (14-4).

North’s Annabelle Sun fell to Marina Duncan 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Lucy Bergman and Grace Conner lost to Ali Griffin and Alexa Lewis 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Siri Poludasu and Nino Arhalaya fell to Grace Kim and Alex Widjasa 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

East edges BNL

BEDFORD — Columbus East pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 singles to clip Bedford North Lawrence 3-2 in the first round of the HHC Tournament.

Lauren Degner beat Becca Epping 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, Katie Hong topped Ashley Wever 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Ruth Federle defeated Italy Lewis 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (9-9).

East’s Shruthika Kumar and Katey Rieckers fell to Isabella Stigall and Mallory Pride 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Allie Gribbins and Sara Moran lost to Kenley Craig and Izzy Aldredge 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Jets fall to Braves

HOPE — Hauser won the No. 1 singles match, but Indian Creek took the other four in a 4-1 decision.

Bella Kilps beat Lauren Lewis 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles for the Jets (7-5).

Hauser’s Charlie Clark fell to Reese Tunell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Lydia Jordan lost 7-6 (4), 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Mattie Foster and Addyson Barriger fell to Olivia Perry and Addy Tunell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Abby Blair and Kayden Miller lost to Laine Swanson and Alexa Sichting 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Devils edge Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County fell to Jeffersonville 3-2 in the first round of the HHC Tournament.

Tatum Brown beat Anella Trujillo 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Kaydence Lowman topped Kirstin Elder 6-0, 7-5 at No. 2 singles for the Panthers (3-11).

Jennings’ Jocelyn Valdovinos fell to Claire Stock 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Mia Silvey and Gabi Morin lost to Eva Ellis and Abby Leep 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Trina Collins and Makenzey Carr fell to Sara Sharp and September Kauchak 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Lancers down Jackets

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh won four matches in straight sets in a 4-1 MHC win against Morristown.

Jessica Walsh beat Sarah Essex 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Izzy Richardson topped Olivia Trlak 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for the Lancers (5-7, 3-1). Gracie Myers and Jillian Turner downed Remi Spicklemire and Bri Flores 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and Lily Turner and Mia Dodson defeated Ashlee Ballinger and Katie Hillock 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Edinburgh’s Zoey Sida fell to Abby Mendoza 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

BOYS GOLF

Jets outscore Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County’s Clay Austin won medalist honors with a 1-over-par 37, but Hauser won the team battle 186-206 at Salt Creek.

Hunter Pappano led the Jets with a 40, Caleb Wallace and Marshall Moody each shot 46, Brendan Burton carded a 54, Colton Hatton added a 56 and Sam Hoene had a 57.

Wesley Arndt added a 52 for the Eagles. Jon Kirchhofer had a 56, Bradley Arndt and Liam Cassiday and Will Hiatt all shot 61.

Lancers win dual

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh scored a 188 against a Fortune Academy team that did not have enough players to score as a team.

Wyatt Burton won medalist honors with a 41 to lead the Lancers. Keegan Smith carded a 46, Devyn Milburn added a 48, Gabe Bennett shot 49, Mason Calhoun had a 50 and DJ Riddle finished with a 53.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

North tops East in 4

Columbus East won the second set to tie the match at 1-1, but Columbus North took the final two sets to claim a 25-18, 14-25, 25-15, 25-11 victory.

Lukas Iorio recorded 11 kills and 23 assists, and Aidan Whitley had 11 kills and five blocks to lead the Bull Dogs. Manny Rubio served four aces, while Whitley added five asists, and Iorio had four blocks.

Alex Duncan pounded 12 kills, Jake Gilbert recorded nine assists and Oliver Carr had five blocks to lead the Olympians. Tyler Ernst tallied eight assists, and Duncan added three blocks.
