Columbus has received two bids on a project to add parking and other traffic calming measures to Second Street, with these proposals each coming in at a little over $1 million.

Dave O’Mara Contractors submitted a bid of $1,163,000 on the Second Street Corridor Project, and Milestone Contractors submitted a bid of $1,359,000, said city engineer Andrew Beckort.

The bids were opened during Tuesday’s Columbus Board of Works meeting, with the board subsequently voting to take the proposals under advisement.

The project is aimed at reducing traffic speeds along Second Street, said redevelopment director Heather Pope. Plans include narrow lanes, bump outs, additional landscaping and on-street parking.

The Columbus Redevelopment Commission approved a contract with Aztec Engineering Group, Inc for design and engineering work on the project in January.

According to Aztec’s contract, the new on-street parallel parking is expected to be in place from Jackson Street to Sycamore Street.

“We’re anticipating construction to take place in the spring of ‘24, with landscaping planted in the fall of ‘24 and everything wrapped up nicely by the end of ‘24,” Pope said at a previous city meeting. “And we’re doing this work in coordination with The Taylor project, providing some narrowing of the road and some parking along Second Street in front of that development.”
