Historical society plans tour of Columbus churches

Robbins

The Bartholomew County Historical Society’s long-running tradition of featuring specially adorned homes and buildings via public tours throughout Bartholomew County continues with a Holiday Church Tour from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 1.

The concept was first done on a smaller scale in 2015.

Organizers are encouraging people to kick off the holiday season with this self-guided walking tour of a few of the local churches, all decked out for Christmas.

Plus, there will be and illuminated path and live music at each stop, whether that means a small choir or organ tunes, according to organizers.

Tickets are $15 per person, with children 10 and younger free when accompanied by an adult. Guests ages 10 to 16 must be accompanied by an adult and have a ticket.

Tickets are available at the historical society, Viewpoint Books, the Columbus Area Visitors Center and on eventbrite.com (search for Holiday Church Tour Tickets).

Diane Robbins, the historical society’s executive director, ideally would like to see maybe 200 people for the event.

“If this is successful, I could see the possibility of maybe doing it every other year,” Robbins said.

Organizers also are blending in promotions to encourage prospective church tour attendees to also stop to see during the event hours the historical society’s annual “Christmas Memories” exhibit, featuring 13 decorated trees in the organization’s museum at 524 Third St. in downtown Columbus.

Tour locations are:

  • First United Methodist Church, 618 Eighth St.
  • First Presbyterian Church, 512 Seventh St.
  • St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 719 Fifth St.
  • First Christian Church, 531 Fifth St.
  • Second Baptist Church, 1325 10th St.

This is a walking tour with limitations on accessibility at several locations.

The historical society museum is open normal hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Proceeds from this event benefit the historical society’s educational programs, exhibits and collection preservation.
