Columbus North High School standout basketball player Ali Patberg was selected as a Core Six member of the Indiana Junior All-Stars. Patberg was joined on the Core Six by travel teammates Jenna Allen and Dominique McBryde of Bedford North Lawrence.

Victoria Baker, director of KinderCare Learning Center in Columbus, received the 1999 Hoosier Educator Award from first lady Judy O’Bannon during the Governor’s Conference on Early Childhood at Purdue University. She was nominated for the award by local staff and one of her professors at IUPUI.

Columbus East High School senior Daniel Lee Heller was appointed to the U.S. military academy in West Point, N.Y. Lee was selected from several applicants who were nominated by a special academy selection committee based on grades, test scores, extra-curriculars and recommendations.
