COLUMBUS
George Larry Sutherland, 82, of Columbus, passed away peacefully at Community South Hospital, Monday, May 20, 2024.
He was the last of five children, born at home to the late John and Sarah Dixon Sutherland. He worked on the family farm early on would give water and sell comic books to soldiers of Camp Atterbury walking the roads by their farm.
He was a graduate of Columbus High School in 1959. He worked at Cummins Engine Company until he was drafted into the United States Army. After his service, he was honorably discharged from duty. After returning to Cummins, he also owned and operated the Gulf Station on 17th Street. He would continue to work at Cummins Engine Company for 25 years. He then went on to Sonoco Flexible Packaging for 25 more years of working until finally retiring.
George fell in love at first sight with the girl that he married, Carolyn Tetrick. They married August 31, 1974 at Sandy Hook United Methodist Church with Rev. Calvin Branburg officiating. They were active members at Sand Hook UMC for 50 years. George served as usher, helped with annual chicken dinners and served as Santa Clause for the children’s program. He enjoyed serving on the Talley Square board for 20 years.
Mr. Sutherland was a big car enthusiast and loved racing. He always attended the Indy 500 races and NASCAR races.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son, Troy (Carol) Sutherland of Columbus; grandson, Kaden (Emily) Sutherland; many nieces and nephews.
Goerge was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ed, Bob, Don and sister, Mary Lou Simpson.
The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Friday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Wes Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home. A live stream of the funeral service may be viewed at 12:00 p.m. Friday at barkesweaverglick.com.
Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veteran Honor Guard.
