Celebrating summer in ‘Festival Country’

People enjoy live music at the Greenwood Amphitheater as part of the city’s summer concert series in 2023. The Saturday evening series returns this month.

Summer is when our parks, amphitheaters and downtowns come to life with music, festivals and fun. Whether it’s a night of dancing to live music under the open sky or a hot summer day splashing at a water park, summer is just getting started.

Here are a few favorites that show why nearby Johnson County got the name Festival Country:

Franklin

The Franklin Farmers Market is 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays through Sept. 21. Enjoy fresh in-season produce, vendors with homemade goods and more at 237 W. Monroe St.

Cruisin’ the Amp returns 4 to 10 p.m. June 7 with a summer concert that features the band Train Wreck, tethered balloon rides, a car show, food trucks and more at 237 W. Monroe St.

Ethos Celebration of the Arts is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 22 along North Main Street. Ethos features live music, vendors, arts programming, beer and wine and other entertainment to celebrate the arts.

Greenwood

Greenwood’s summer concert series takes place Saturdays from 7 to 9 p.m. The June 8 concert features Jai Baker Trio. The June 15 concert features Crush: Bon Jovi Experience, followed by a concert featuring The Woomblies Rock Orchestra on June 22.

Bargersville

The Picnic Concert Series at Mallow Run Winery is continuing all month long for music and wine lovers at 6964 W. Whiteland Road. The June 8 concert features The Big 80’s from 6 to 9 p.m. The June 9 concert features The Bishops from 2 to 5 p.m. The June 15 concert features Best Kept Secret from 6 to 9 p.m. The June 22 concert features Small Town: John Mellencamp Tribute from 6 to 9 p.m. The June 29 concert features Hairbangers Ball from 7 to 10 p.m.

The Bargersville Farmers Market is 5 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday from through Sept. 25 at 24 N. Main St.

The Bargersville summer concert series is happening 7 to 9 p.m. June 6 at 24 N. Main St. This concert features Phil Perle & The Enablers. The June 20 concert showcases Duke Tumatoe & The Power Trio from 7 to 9 p.m.

Whiteland

Whiteland’s farmers market will take place 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday through Aug. 27 at the Clark Pleasant Branch, 350 Clearwater Blvd.

Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Farmers Market is Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. through Sept. 26 at 201 W. Main St.

Trafalgar

The Trafalgar Farmers Market is 4:30 to 7 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 29 at 108 N. State Road 135.

Fourth of July Events

Greenwood’s Freedom Festival is 4 to 10:30 p.m. June 29 and includes a parade, live music, local food, and a fireworks show to conclude the evening.

Downtown Franklin’s Firecracker Festival with food vendors, entertainment, fireworks, and more takes place July 3. The festival kicks off with a live concert from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. with the firework show being at 10:10 p.m.

The Edinburgh Firecracker Festival is July 4 from 5 to 10:30 p.m. This year’s schedule includes a car cruise-in from 6 to 7 p.m., bounce houses and food trucks from 5 to 9 p.m., music and entertainment. Fireworks at the water tower will conclude the evening.
