Jennings County deputies investigate fatal accident, arrest driver

JENNINGS COUNTY — Jennings County Sheriff deputies are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at 9:10 p.m. Monday near Brush Creek Elementary School.

When deputies arrived, they determined that two vehicles, a 2014 Hyundai passenger car and a 2011 Toyota Tundra had collided and Indiana State Police were contacted for crash reconstruction.

Deputies said the driver of the Hyundai, Anthony Lucas, 44, North Vernon, died in the accident.

The driver of the Toyota, James Pittman, 41, North Vernon, displayed signs of intoxication and submitted to a toxicology test, with results pending, deputies said. Pittman has been arrested on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing death, a Level 4 felony.

U.S. 50 East was closed for about 4 and a half hours for crash reconstruction.

Deputies were assisted by Indiana State Police, North Vernon police, Jennings County EMS, Campbell Township Volunteer Fire Department and Jennings County dispatch.
