COLUMBUS
Lewis W. “Sparky” Essex, 92, of Columbus, passed from this life at 2:49 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. A cherished family man, respected businessman, was born on February 17, 1932, in Columbus. His life was a testament to his intelligence, friendliness, and dedication to his community.
His journey began as a bright student at Columbus High School, where he graduated in 1950 and lettered in basketball, track and field and cross county. His passion for learning took him to Purdue University, where he earned a B.S. in Industrial Economics in 1958, and later to Harvard Business School, where he completed an Executive Education Program in 1976. Alongside his academic pursuits, Mr. Essex proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
His industrious spirit led him to Golden Foundry, where he quickly ascended to the role of President, serving from 1965 to 1970. In 1970, he founded Essex Castings, Inc. and remained at its helm as President, guiding the company with his characteristic wisdom and foresight. He was past President of Gray Iron Foundry Association and was the recipient of the William J. Grede award by the American Foundryman’s Society, for excellence in Management.
His leadership extended beyond the boardroom. He was an active participant in the community, contributing his time and expertise to various organizations. His involvement earned him numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Service Award in 1967, recognition as one of the Five Outstanding Young Men of Indiana that same year, and the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash award. His commitment to service was evident through his roles as past President of the Harrison Lake Country Club, member of the Purdue Board of Trustees, and active participant in the John Purdue Club.
A true pillar of the community, he served a past director of the Bartholomew County Red Cross, Boys Club of Columbus, Rotary Club, United Fund, and Columbus Chamber of Commerce. His dedication to civic engagement included serving on the Mayor’s Advisory Committee, Retirement Foundation Fund Drive Committee, Foundation for Youth Fund Drive Committee, and United Way Fund Drive Committee. He also held positions on the Board of Directors at Home Federal Savings and Bartholomew County Hospital.
His faith played a significant role in his life, as he was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church.
An avid golfer, he found joy and relaxation on the course.
He was a loving husband to his late wife, Margaret Ann Roth, whom he married on June 20, 1954. She preceded him in death on August 1, 2017. He leaves behind a legacy through his children, Stephen S. (Pam Cave) Essex of Columbus, LuAnn E. (Randy) Weinantz of Edinburgh, Michael G. (Leah) Essex, and Patricia M. (Mark) Johnson, both of Columbus. His grandchildren, Scott (Stephanie) Essex, Sean (Kawana) Essex, Mitchell (Bailey) Essex, Angie Russell, Dan (Natalie) Burt, Aly (Lucas Vondran) Burt, Brittany (Zach) Purtlebaugh, Adria (Logan) Eversman, Kylah Essex, Michael Hooker, Lyndsay (John) Coleman, Chase Johnson, Emma Johnson, and Nash Johnson, as well as his fourteen great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, John Essex. His memory will be honored and cherished by all who knew him.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral on Washington Street with John Sichting officiating.
Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation from 10:00 a.m. to time of service.
He will be laid to rest beside his wife at the Garland Brook Cemetery.
