GREENWOOD — One person has died after a fire at a Greenwood apartment building on Sunday.
Greenwood firefighters were called to an apartment on the 400 of Clearbrook Drive, near Woodmen Park, for a reported explosion at 11:16 a.m Sunday. This is inside Clearview Apartments, a complex that offers studio to 2-bedroom units. It was previously reported it was on the 800 block, but this was corrected in an update by fire officials Sunday afternoon.
The first arriving units were met with a single story multi-family structure with fire showing, and evacuation was already in progress for six of the building’s eight units. One unit was unoccupied, and the other was where the fire occurred, fire officials said.
Except in the apartment where the fire started, the initial search of the building was complete and cleared of any occupants. The primary apartment could not be completely searched due to “a large presence of fire and structural hazards” within the building, fire officials said in a news release.
Firefighters located one person who was deceased in the primary apartment with fire. No one else was injured.
The fire has since been put out, said Tyler Swardson, a fire department spokesperson.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, and fire investigators were only just arriving to the scene at around 12:10 p.m. Sunday. Greenwood Police investigators will be assisting with the investigation, along wihth the Johnson County Coroner’s Office and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The Indiana State Fire Marshal is also responding to the scene, fire officials said.
Both the American Red Cross and Fire Angels have been contacted, fire officials said.
The White River Township and Bargersville fire departments also assisted.
