Five local boxers won by walkover, and another won by TKO Saturday in the Indiana Silver Gloves championships at the Crump Theatre.
Jaden Jimenez, Aliyah Grimes and Yadiel Castillo all won by walkover and advanced to the Silver Gloves Regional Jan. 18-20 in Anderson. Jimenez is a defending national champion.
Juan Ferrera-Castaneda and Adrian Chaplin won by walkover in the Novice Division and will be fighting other winners on Feb. 6 in Indianapolis.
Also in the Novice Bracket, Tyler Lonaker won by first-round TKO after he gave opponent from Kokomo three 8-counts.
“Tyler will continue to work on getting more experience,” Columbus PAL boxing coach Seth Caffee said. We’ll be getting him in local club shows to get him more experience for next year.”
Caffee, who coaches the Columbus group along with Peter Soler and Rob Hurst, is the Indiana Silver Gloves director and Indiana Golden Gloves tournament director. Saturday’s event featured 16 teams from Columbus,Demotte, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Goshen, Gary, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Muncie, Terre Haute and Vevay.
Of the 100 boxers who were entered, 34 ended up competing in bouts.
“We had some that didn’t make weight and some that didn’t make the trip,” Caffee said.
