COLUMBUS
Dickie L. Jones, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 4, 2025, in Columbus, Indiana, at the age of 92. Born on September 10, 1932, in Bartholomew County, Dickie was a man whose life was marked by dedication, service, and the love of his family.
Dickie’s journey began as the beloved son of his late parents. His formative years in Bartholomew County laid the foundation for a life of integrity and hard work. After graduating from high school, Dickie proudly served his country by joining the United States Army on February 6, 1953. His time in the military instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried with him long after his honorable discharge on January 5, 1955.
Returning to civilian life, Dickie embarked on a new adventure as an entrepreneur. He owned and operated Gene’s Cafeteria in Columbus for over 30 years, where his leadership and culinary skills were appreciated by all who dined there. His commitment to community service led him to become the President of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. Dickie was also a member of the Military Draft Board, the Columbus Optimist Club, and was a respected 50-year Mason at the Columbus Masonic Lodge.
Dickie’s life was one of boundless curiosity and varied interests. He was an avid trap shooter, a skill that required precision and patience. His passion for flying was evident to anyone who saw the joy in his eyes as he piloted his airplane across the clear blue skies. Reading was another pastime that allowed Dickie to explore worlds beyond his own, and he was proud to be “sharp” with an excellent memory that remained intact until his final days.
Intelligent and interesting are words that best describe Dickie. His intellect was matched by his engaging personality, making him a captivating figure in any gathering. He was a man who not only loved to learn but also to share his knowledge and stories with those around him.
Dickie’s legacy is lovingly carried on by his devoted wife of 68 years, Alice, who was his partner in every aspect of life. Together, they raised a family that includes their son, Greg R. (Teresa) Jones of Seymour; daughters, Jana L. Jones of Pasadena, California, and Jill A. (Steven) Stanton of Columbus, Indiana. He is survived by his grandchildren, Ryan (Nici) Jones, Patrick Jones, Nick (Cindy) Jones, Conner Stanton, Madison Stanton; and great-grandchildren, Wes Jones, Emery Jones, Quinn Jones, Bubba Uhi, Alice Jones, Indy Jones, and River Jones.
Dickie L. Jones’s life was one well-lived, marked by love, service, and the pursuit of knowledge. He will be deeply missed by those that know and love him.
