Class A No. 4 Hauser boys rout Twisters; girls fall to Chargers

Stryker Gill

HOPE — It was a total team effort for the Hauser boys basketball team Tuesday night.

The Class A No. 4 Jets controlled the game right from the opening tip to walk away with a 68-33 victory over Oldenburg Academy.

“We want our teammates to do well, and we don’t care who scores the ball,” Hauser junior Gavin Keller said. “Teams can’t focus on one guy on our team. We have several guys that score the ball at any moment in time.”

The Jets (12-2) had a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and put the game away 16-1 run to end the first half to balloon the lead to 37-11 at the half.

“We shared the ball great,” said Hauser senior Collin Buck, who finished with a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. “We were forcing a little bit, but then we started watching, looking for open cutters and swinging the ball great and finishing strong.”

The Jets led 55-26 after third quarter, and got it to a 62-26 lead to trigger a running clock. Both teams went to the benches to close out the final four minutes of the game.

Ledger Gelfius scored 13 points for Hauser. Taeshaun Tungate finished with 11, and Keller added nine.

Stryker Gill scored only three points, but was instrumental in the team’s offensive output as he finished with 13 assists to go along with four steals.

It was also pick-your-poison for the Twisters (8-5) as eight players got into the scoring column for the Jets.

“I thought it was a full 32-minute game for us offensively and defensively, but it is a coach’s best friend to see that assist stat come into play night in and night out the way we do,” Hauser coach Trent Moorhead said. “A ton of credit goes to Stryker Gill for the way he distributes the ball, especially in transition, pitching it ahead and finding the opening man. It might not be a big-time scoring night for Stryker, but he is going to find who’s open and make the right read. You need a solid point guard like that to really get the ball moving offensively. We’re lucky to have one.”

The Jet girls didn’t fare as well Tuesday against Mid-Hoosier Conference foe North Decatur. Hauser couldn’t get enough done at the offensive end and fell 42-27.

The Chargers (15-7, 5-1) held the Jets (10-12, 2-4) scoreless the first 11 minutes of the game and led 20-0 in the second quarter. Hauser trailed 31-5 midway through the third quarter until the offense finally got going, but by then, it was way too late.

Braelyn Williams

Braelyn Williams led the Jets with 13 points. Norah Berkenstock added seven.

Hauser ends the regular season 10-12 and will have eight days of rest until taking on on Jac-Cen-Del at around 7:45 p.m. Feb. 5. The girls sectional will be hosted by the Jets.
