JENNINGS COUNTY — A 30-year-old North Vernon suspect has been arrested on a charge of murder and other related charges following a joint investigation by the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police.

Investigators said they arrested Conner M. Montgomery on Sunday in regards to the death of his father, Robert “Matthew” Montgomery, 53.

On Sunday, shortly after 10 p.m., Jennings deputies, North Vernon police and Indiana State Police were sent to an address in the 4000 block of East Private Road 450S in Jennings County after receiving a shots fired report.

Officers arrived and located a deceased male who had been shot, later identified as Robert “Matthew” Montgomery, outside of the residence, Indiana State Police said.  Officers were able to get the alleged suspect, Conner M. Montgomery to exit the residence where he was taken into custody.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Conner was at the residence with an adult female and two children when an altercation occurred where he pointed a gun at her and fired it inside of the home, state police said. When the female attempted to leave the home, Conner shot her vehicle, disabling it. Conner’s father, Robert Montgomery, was called to the scene before law enforcement was notified. When he arrived, Conner allegedly shot him while he stood outside of the home, state police said.
