College sports notebook: Swegman runs to HCAC title; others run, swim, dive in conference meets

Callie Swegman won the 5,000 meters and finished third in the 3,000 meters in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships to lead the Hanover women to a fourth-place team finish.

Swegman, a junior from Hauser, ran 18 minutes, 29.07 seconds in the 5,000 and 10:53.29 in the 3,000.

Colin Kistler, a freshman from Hauser, anchored Hanover’s men’s distance medley relay team to a third-place finish in 10:57.87. Alex Bower, a freshman from Hauser, took eighth in the triple jump at 12.23 meters.

Barnett takes pair of seconds

Mackenzie Barnett finished second in both the 5,000 meters and 3,000 meters to help the Lipscomb women to a runner-up team finish in the ASUN Indoor Championships.

Barnett, a senior from Columbus North, was clocked in 16 minutes, 4.19 seconds in the 5,000 and 9:21.66 in the 3,000.

Newell anchors Navy to victory

Matt Newell, a junior from Columbus North, anchored the Navy 4×800-meter relay team to victory in the Patriot League Indoor Championships.

The Midshipmen’s time of 7 minutes, 28.95 seconds ranks in the top 10 in school history and helped lead Navy to the team title.

Smith, Baker compete in SEC indoor

Tucker Smith finished fifth in the shot put in the SEC Indoor Championships to help Oklahoma to a third-place team finish.

Smith, a sophomore from Columbus North, threw 19.71 meters (64 feet, 8 inches).

Oklahoma’s Lily Baker, a sophomore from North, finished 12th in the women’s mile in 4:47.86. The Sooner women were second in the team standings.

Gray helps DePauw to NCAC title

Emma Gray finished eighth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.36 seconds to help DePauw to the women’s team title at the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

Rutan hits, pitches EKU to 5-0 weekend

Maddi Rutan went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs and allowed one hit with 12 strikeouts in five shutout innings Friday to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 7-0 win against Illinois Chicago.

Rutan, a sophomore from Columbus North, went 1 for 2 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in Friday’s 9-0 second-game win against UIC.

Also Saturday, Rutan went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run and allowed three hits and three runs (none) earned with five strikeouts in a 7-4 win against Akron. She went 2 for 3 with an RBI in Sunday’s 4-0 win against Akron.

Rutan went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run and allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out nine to pick up the win for the Colonels (13-5) in Sunday’s 5-2 victory against Dayton.

Sitterding collects hits for Charleston

Julia Sitterding went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs Sunday for College of Charleston (5-14) in a 9-1 win against Mercer.

Sitterding, a junior from Columbus East, went 2 for 3 with two runs in Friday’s 8-6 win against Florida Gulf Coast. She also had a stolen base in Friday’s 4-1 loss to Mercer.

Mackey, Lemmons shine for Grenadiers

Lillian Mackey went 2 for 3 with a double, and RBI and a run and Josie Lemmons went 1 for 3 with a stolen base and a run Friday as IU Southeast opened its season with a 12-4 loss to Indiana Wesleyan.

Lovelace has big weekend for Calumet

Kelsey Lovelace went 1 for 2 with two RBIs Friday in Calumet College of St. Joseph’s 13-5 first-game loss at Warner (Florida).

McDaniel notches first collegiate win

Paige McDaniel recorded her first collegiate win last week in Oakland City’s 6-3 victory against Johnson (Tennessee) in Melbourne, Florida. She allowed one hit and struck out two in 4.1 innings of shutout relief.

Beyer nets three top-30 finishes in Big 12

Cincinnati’s Brady Beyer finished 14th in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15 minutes, 23.37 seconds in the Big 12 Championships.

Lawson scores 12 points in loss

Kylah Lawson netted 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and led University of Indianapolis (8-20, 6-14) with three steals in 32 minutes Saturday’s 79-69 season-ending loss at Quincy.

Earlier in the week, Lawson, a junior from Columbus North, had four points, five rebounds, three assists, one steal and led the Greyhounds with two blocks in 25 minutes in a 72-61 loss to Truman State.

Greiwe helps IWU to Crossroads title

Koryn Greiwe recorded four points, one rebound and one assist in 13 minutes in Indiana Wesleyan’s 98-55 win against Goshen in the first round of the Crossroads League Tournament.

The Wildcats (29-2), who beat Marian 64-58 in Tuesday’s final, will host the NAIA First and Second Rounds March 14-15.

Murphy, Olivet play in CCAC tourney

Daniel Murphy notched eight points and three rebounds and led Olivet Nazarene with seven assists in 33 minutes in a 75-73 win against IU South Bend in the first round of the CCAC Tournament.
