There’s a VanDeventer atop the leaderboard at the Men’s City Golf Tournament, but it’s not the one people might have expected.
Paul VanDeventer, the older brother of defending champion Luke VanDeventer, fired an even-par 72 Saturday at Greenbelt to take the lead at the midway point. The final round is Sunday, also at Greenbelt.
“I played fairly well,” said Paul VanDeventer, a Miamisburg, Ohio, resident, former Wright State golfer and the son of Greenbelt pro Keith VanDeventer. “The course was hard and fast, so I wasn’t too disappointed with the way I played. It was definitely a grind out there today. It was a good test for sure.”

Steve Lewis, the two-time defending champion in the Senior Division, and Greg Hundley also carded 72 Saturday and are tied atop the 12-player seniors field. Hauser boys and girls golf coach Steve Todd is in third place in the senior division after a 76.
Ben Luedeke, a former Columbus East golfer who will be a sophomore at IU Columbus, is in second place in the Championship Flight after an opening-round 73.
“I played OK,” Luedeke said. “I didn’t play super great. On the front nine, I couldn’t putt at all. I missed lots of my putts, then on the back nine, I started putting better. I could have been probably a handful of shots better, realistically. But I just stayed calm and relaxed out there and had fun.”
Danny Holcomb, recent Columbus North graduate Carter Battin and former East golfer Kody Reynolds are tied for third at 74. Luke VanDeventer, a North grad who just wrapped up his senior season at Huntington University, is sixth at 75.
North graduate Willy Davis, who will be a junior on the DePauw team, is seventh at 77. Maverick Jones, Shane Spray, Alex Clark and Ross Pushor are tied for eighth at 78.
