Prosecutor’s office to apply for STOP Violence Against Women Grant

Bartholomew County Commissioners Monday approved the prosecutor’s office’s application for the STOP Violence Against Women grant. This will be the 18th grant cycle the county has applied for the funds.

The grant enhances the capacity of local communities to combat violent crimes and strengthen victim services according to the U.S. Department of Justice website. Funding comes from the federal government, which then allocated funds to each state which in turn distributes them to applicants. Each state must allocate 25% for law enforcement, 25% for prosecutors, 30% for victim services, 5% to state and local courts and 15% for discretionary distribution.

In 2024, the state of Indiana received almost $3.4 million to distribute to cities around the state. In 2023, Indiana received around $3.3 million, according to the U.S. Department of Justice website.

The grant amount for 2024 was $63,712, with an additional $21,826 match from the county. This amounted to around 9% of the deputy prosecutor’s salary.

The federal government has not made the funding amount official yet for the 2025 fiscal year. Rachel Clark, representing the county prosecutor’s office, is hopeful that funding will remain at the same amount after attending an informational meeting last week.

The grant is due to be submitted by July 30.
