Bartholomew County under marginal risk for severe weather today

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County is under a marginal risk (1/5) for severe weather today, according to Bartholomew County Emergency Management. 

Scattered showers and thunderstorms this morning, followed by a brief lull this afternoon.

Additional thunderstorms are expected to develop late today into this evening and push eastward through the state. Storms this evening will mostly remain sub-severe, but an isolated damaging wind gust is possible.

Timing:

  • Wednesday – Between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. Thursday. Peak threat between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Main Threats:

  • Damaging winds – 60+ mph
  • Heavy rain

Actions/What To Do:

  • Be weather aware.
  • Have multiple ways to receive warnings.
  • Remember, tornado sirens are meant to alert people outdoors.
  • Know where to shelter within your home or place of work.
  • Ensure flashlights and radios have fresh batteries and cell phones are charged.
  • Use caution when driving.  Strong winds can make driving difficult and cause high profile vehicles to overturn.
  • Strong winds can cause downed trees and power lines that may be difficult to see in the dark.
  • Do not drive through moving or standing water.  If you can’t see the road, turn around.
