COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Emergency Management says a heat advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, with heat index values up to 106 expected.
The advisory is in effect for portions of central, east central, north central, south central, and southeast Indiana.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Bartholomew County is offering several cooling station locations this week due to warm temperatures.
Bartholomew County Public Library, 536 Fifth St. in Columbus will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Its Hope branch, 635 Harrison St., Hope, is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
The Community Engagement Center, 1075 Second St., Columbus, is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. After 5 p.m., Brighter Days, 421 S. Mapleton St., will be available.
There will be no animal crates available and only service animals may be in the buildings.
Food, showers and areas for sleep are not available.
Those visiting these locations are asked to respect the rules of the facility and other individuals in the facility.
