COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus officials today announced the resignation of Parks and Recreation Director Mark Jones, effective Sept. 4. After nearly 29 years of public service, Jones is stepping down to pursue new professional opportunities, city officials said. His departure marks the conclusion of a distinguished career during which the department achieved significant growth, expanded its programs and facilities, and strengthened its connection to the community, according to the city.
“Mark brought loyalty and an unwavering commitment to ensuring our parks served everyone in our community,” said Mayor Mary K. Ferdon. “His leadership has made a lasting impact, and we thank him for his incredible service to the city of Columbus. I was honored to work with him for nearly 10 years and appreciate his work ethic, dedication and passion for parks.”
Throughout his tenure, Jones led the transformation of the city’s parks and recreation system. Among his most notable accomplishments were the construction of Circle K Fieldhouse, and the redevelopment of the former Fair Oaks Mall into NexusPark, a vibrant community destination for recreation, wellness, and sports tourism. These landmark projects not only enhanced local quality of life but also positioned Columbus as a regional hub for outdoor and athletic activities.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of Columbus,” said Jones. “I am proud of what we’ve accomplished together and am excited for what lies ahead.”
The city will begin a formal search for new Parks and Recreation Department leadership in the coming weeks. In the interim, city administrators said they have confidence in the current assistant directors and staff to lead ongoing operations.
