A heat advisory has been extended until 8 p.m. Friday for Bartholomew, Decatur, Lawrence, Jackson and Jennings counties, including the cities of Columbus, Shelbyville, North Vernon and Seymour.
Heat index values of up to 108 degrees are possible in central, south central and southeast Indiana. Heat illnesses could occur.
Bartholomew County Emergency Management advises those in the advisory area to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
