COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrested a local woman on multiple charges after being sent to a North U.S. 31 address about two unsupervised juveniles inside a residence.

Emily Deweerdt, 22, Columbus, was arrested on charges of dealing in methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, neglect of a dependent and possession of a controlled substance. She remains in custody at the Bartholomew County Jail on a 72-hour-hold, according to Lt. Dane Duke, sheriff’s office spokesman.

At about 10:05 a.m. Monday, deputies were sent to the 13500 block of North U.S. 31 for the welfare check after a caller told them that the mother was asleep on the couch with what appeared to be narcotics within immediate reach of the children, Duke said.

The caller also told deputies after the call was made to police, a verbal altercation ensued with the mother who then fled the residence, Duke said.

A search warrant was granted for the residence and deputies found more than 26 grams of suspected methamphetamine, various prescription medications, drug paraphernalia, narcotics packaging material and a digital scale, Duke said.

After Deweerdt was taken into custody, the Department of Child Services was contacted and the children were safely relocated.
