Sandy Hook United Methodist Church is accepting donations for Little Lambs Child Care Ministry teacher Melody Green and her family, who were impacted by a house fire last Friday night.
According to Stacy Greathouse, Green’s aunt and fellow Little Lambs teacher, the fire had started in the garage at 12581 E. 25th St. on Friday night. The kitchen and living room sustained fire damage while the rest of the house sustained smoke damage, but the garage was declared a complete loss. Greathouse said that her brother sustained some significant burns and two of her nephews received lesser burns.
“They were working on a truck in the garage and something happened with the truck, no one’s quite sure what happened,” Greathouse said. “But it did start in the garage.”
To assist Green and her family , Sandy Hook United Methodist Church and Little Lambs are accepting donations, coordinated by church member Andrea Bland. She said when she heard the news of what happened to Green, who has taught her children for a couple of years, she felt that they as a church needed to help them how ever they could.
“… at Sandy Hook, we just really believe that we’re supposed to be the hands and feet of Jesus, filling needs in our community… our pastor says, ‘in Columbus as it is in Heaven’ so we’re just trying to do our part,” Bland said.
Greathouse said they have had many people donate to the family, especially in terms of kids clothing for the three kids who were in the house at the time of the fire. They are currently most in need of gift cards for grocery stores, restaurants or gas, as well as general house items like towels and kitchenware.
The support the family has seen from the church body and community has been wonderful, Greathouse said. She said the church had been there when her brother went through another house fire more than 10 years ago, and they have stepped up now just as they did back then.
“They took up a love offering (Sunday) during service and were able to bring out some money to them to help in whatever way they could,” Greathouse said. “It just really makes you stop and realize how fortunate you are and even though there are injuries that everyone’s safe and that people love you, even though they don’t know you, and they’re doing the Lord’s work.”
Donations can be dropped off in the Sandy Hook United Methodist Church lobby from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, Bland said.
