Crimson Pride go 4-0 in season-opening tourney

HUNTINGTON — IU Columbus volleyball is off to the fastest start of any athletic program in the school’s history after going 4-0 this weekend in Huntington’s season-opening Forester Tournament.

The Crimson Pride swept Governors State 25-15, 25-20, 25-18 and Wilberforce 25-18, 24-15, 25-10 Friday. Saturday, IUC beat Governors State 25-10, 25-18, 25-27, 22-25, 15-11 and swept Calumet College of St. Joseph 25-14, 25-18, 25-11.

Cora Baker pounded a combined 36 kills in the four matches, and Bailey Stevens recorded 75 assists and nine aces to lead the Crimson Pride. Ava Granson had 10 blocks, and Alyvia Luce notched 46 blocks. Ruthie Bingham, a senior transfer and Trinity Lutheran graduate, also came up big, especially in Saturday’s five-set win against Governors State.

IUC will play a pair of exhibition games Aug. 23 at Hanover and Aug. 27 at Marian before returning to regular-season competition Aug. 29-30 at the Saint Mary-of-the Woods Showdown in the Woods tourney. The home opener is Sept. 9 against Franklin at Ceraland.
